Gender and Social Inclusion Academic Forum

On July 23, 2025, Bali Sruti, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Ngurah Rai University, and the KAPAL Perempuan Institute held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the theme “Integrating Gender Equality and Justice into Curricula and Courses.”

The event brought together lecturers from various public and private universities across Bali. In an open and constructive atmosphere, participants shared their experiences and challenges in integrating gender issues into their academic programs.

The discussion was filled with enthusiasm and practical ideas on how to overcome barriers to incorporating gender equality. Some universities have already embedded gender-related topics into their courses, while others are just beginning and saw the FGD as a valuable opportunity for learning and knowledge sharing.

This FGD is expected to be the first step toward driving systemic change in higher education, where gender equality becomes an integral part of the curriculum. Continued collaboration between universities, NGOs, and related stakeholders is hoped to strengthen a more just and inclusive education system and contribute to long-term positive social change in Indonesia.

Understanding Values of Equality and Justice Through Drama

On April 22, 2025, the Widya Santhi Women’s School in Dangin Puri Kangin Village held a special session with Bali Sruti and guests from KAPAL Perempuan, Mba Misi and Mba Ulfa. In this session, participants not only learned how to play bleganjur (a traditional Balinese percussion), but also engaged in deeper discussions on gender norms and the power of women to challenge and overcome inequality rooted in those norms. The atmosphere was warm and interactive, creating space for every participant to voice their perspectives and reflect on their life experiences through a gender lens. The session also invited participants to revisit their earlier learnings and recognize how gender experiences are shaped from childhood, adolescence, adulthood, to old age. As part of a participatory learning method, the women took part in a drama exercise portraying everyday situations that reflect gender inequality. This approach helped make the material more relatable and easier to grasp in the context of their real lives. Participants joined the activity with enthusiasm and supported one another throughout the process, creating a shared sense of empowerment and learning.
